Young Members’ Committee Games Night

Tuesday 4th February, 2020

The Young Members’ Group (YMG) came together on the evening of Thursday 23rd May 2019 for the first of what will become an annual event: the ‘YMG Games Night’. Held at the Alphabeta Building in the City and kindly hosted by CIS Security and Huckletree, it was a nice scene to witness as senior and junior members of the Company came together in relaxed surroundings to socialise and get to know one another. The YMG Committee was pleased to welcome some familiar faces in the form of the Immediate Past Master, Stephen Anderton, the Chairman of the Finance & General Purposes Committee, Paul Ramsay, and the Master- elect of the Company, Michael Barley and his wife, Jayne. Among the young members were a variety of people, all at different stages in their lives, ranging from university students to those working in both the public and private sectors.

On arrival, there was a short introductory speech to welcome the attendees and explain a little about the Company’s history, as well its plans for the future as it moves into the new Master’s term: essentially an opportunity to identify where we’ve come from, where we are, and where we’re heading as an established and well respected City Livery Company. This was followed by those that already knew one another catching up over a drink and nibbles, but also by the entire group going out of their way to meet and greet some new faces.

It was from this point that the fun and games started in the form of multiple challenges, including a match to see which team could tie the most knots in a piece of string in a minute, the challenge manifesting when the teams then had to swap strings and battle to be the first to untie everything! Other challenges included the building of a tower with straws and blue tack (it wouldn’t be the same without this now, would it), charades and a paper-based game of trying to identify the correct film off a series of drawings – we do have some artists among our ranks!

All in all, the evening went down very well and certainly stirred plenty of smiles and laughs along the way. It’s always a case of trial and error with events of this kind and, as a committee, we are pleased to report that this was a success and something we would certainly like to repeat in future.

Special thanks are required to our Chairman, Jade Davies, and YMG Deputy Chairman, Tilly Sherwood, for their organisation of this event – it wouldn’t have happened without their input. We would also like to thank all those that turned out for the evening, both senior and junior members, and hope to see you all in the very near future for our next event in September 2019 at the RAF Club, London.
